Anniversary Interview: Paul Lincks

Paul Lincks is celebrating 20 years with HMB this month.  Paul serves as the Regional Office Manager and Project Manager for roadway and structure projects in HMB's New Albany, IN branch office.  In honor of Paul's anniversary, we asked him a few questions:

What made you get into civil engineering?

Coming out of high school I applied to a few different colleges.  I got accepted in the freshman engineering program at Purdue University.  I chose civil because you could specialize in a certain area like transportation or structures.  I had a more clear direction as to what job I would seek when I finished my degree.  And it seemed that there would always be a job market for infrastructure improvements.

Where did you attend college? What did you major in?

Purdue University, Civil Engineering

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Interacting with the people I work with and with clients.  It’s also satisfying to see something that we've designed be built.

What’s the most interesting part of your job?

Juggling a large number of projects.  I always have good intentions of getting a list of certain things done and that list usually gets thrown in the trash as soon as I go through my emails in the morning.  I work hard to be very responsive to our clients.  That means being flexible to realize that you may not get done what you had planned on doing, but you are working daily to exceed the client’s expectations.

Which project(s) are you most proud to have worked on in your career? Why?

Probably the Charlestown State Park Improvements project.  It involved improving 2 miles of roadway with some realignment, a bridge replacement, a parking area for 50 cars with 2 Ohio River overlook structures, restroom facilities, an ADA loading dock for boaters, and a large parking area (80+) with boat ramp access to the Ohio River.  The boat ramp is 75’ wide which can launch 5 boats at one time.  Not only did we get to design the different aspects of the project, but we were involved in the construction administration which was very rewarding.  We are very proud that the improvements fit with the environment of the park and that some of our ideas helped make that happen.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy fitness, cycling, antiquing, and spending time with the family.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one item what would it be?

My wife.

What’s your favorite movie?

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

What’s your favorite TV show?

American Pickers, Duck Dynasty, and Fast & Loud.

What would be your dream vacation?

Probably to a private beach in the Caribbean.

What superhero would you be and why?

I’ll go with the Hulk.  No one would want to make me angry and if they did, I’d smash everything in sight.

If you could travel by plane, train, automobile or boat, which would you choose?

Automobile.  Cause I’m a control freak and can’t operate the other modes of transportation.

What is your favorite genre of music? Do you have a favorite band?

I listen to a lot of different genres.  Christian, Country, Classic Rock, 80’s.....Some of what I’m listening to now is Skillet, Needtobreathe and Toby Mac.

What’s your favorite type of food? Do you have a favorite restaurant?

Mexican, usually dine at El Nopal.

What's your favorite sports team? Do you prefer college or professional?

Purdue sports teams.  I follow the New Orleans Saints because Drew Brees is my favorite player and he played football at Purdue.
