Chapel Lane Extension (Hoover, AL)

Home / Projects / Chapel Lane Extension (Hoover, AL)

This project involved developing construction plans for a new road that connects Galleria Boulevard, south of the existing I-459 and US 31 interchange in the city of Hoover to Chapel Lane north of I-459. The project provides Bluff Park residents and other Hoover neighborhoods access to the Riverchase Galleria, Patton Creek Shopping Center and I-459. The alignment parallels Patton Creek beneath the existing I-459 bridge and then crosses the creek to connect with the current Chapel Lane terminus at Al Seier Road.

The bridge is a 16 span structure located in an alignment having three reverse curves. Ten spans on the south end and three on the north are framed with simple span type III precast, prestressed, concrete “I” beams. The longest PCI beam spans are 70 feet which accommodate the 420 foot curve radii with a chorded framing plan. These shorter spans simplify erection beneath the existing I-459 bridge. Three spans nearest the Patton Creek channel are framed with curved, welded, steel plate girders. The 44 foot roadway width on the bridge accommodates a three lane section to allow for turning lanes on the south approach. A six foot sidewalk is located on the east side only.
