This project involved the replacement of a structurally deficient steel truss bridge near Quicksand, KY. The proposed structure has spans of 100’-135’-115’ and the proposed deck is 31’ wide supported by 3 ~ Type HN-72 x 61 prestressed concrete I-beams. The substructure will use integral end bents and single column, hammerhead piers. The project was designed on a fast track due to the deterioration of existing bridge and absence of an existing detour.
The bridge is perched above the 100 year high-water with a low spot in the southern approach roadway which functions as an overflow relief. The University of Kentucky operates an agricultural center near the bridge site. HMB coordinated with UK to provide features for future lighting and communication facilities. Decorative parapets and treatments to pier columns were incorporated into the design to enhance this gateway into the UK facility.
